About Me

McMinnville, OR, United States
Hi! Welcome to my blog. I am a mixed media artist who lives in McMinnville, Oregon. I work in acrylics, watercolor, pastel, charcoal and other water and drawing media. My main subjects are abstracts, abstract landscapes, florals and gardens, equine abstracts and pet portraits. I love to use color! I try to incorporate the three C's in all of my work - color, contrast and composition! Most of these paintings are for sale. Please check with me for availability and prices if not posted. Blue Grasses

This is an 10x14 water media with pastel. I just added line and more line to this one - with lots of color. These are really fun to do. I hope to do other pieces with all this line, but not as landscapes - more pure abstract. So keep tuned. If your're interested in this reasonably priced piece, please contact me.

Southwestscape Five

5x7 watercolor with pastel. As I drive around the valley in Southern California where I live, I get ideas for these abstract landscapes. They also make nice larger paintings as well.

Golden Sky Two

This is 16x11 watercolor with pastel and charcoal. I have done several of these with this color combination. I tried to get a lot of contrast in this one. Tell me what you think of this color combination at jcengles@verizon.net.

Power Poppy

This is a 24x20 acrylic on canvas. This was inspired by the great abstract expressionist Hans Hofmann. If you're not familiar with his work, look him up and enjoy! If you're interested inthis piece, please contact me at jcengles@verizon.net or:

Chestnut with Green Shadow Roll

This is an oil pastel that I did. I wanted to post it to show the qualities of oil pastels. I had discussed how much I enjoyed the brilliancy of soft pastels. Well, oil pastels are very rich and deep in color. They smudge a bit and they are not as easy to layer as soft pastels, but they do give a wonderful look. This painting was also fixed which gave it a glossy finish. Let me know what you think of oil pastels. SOLD

Caramel Mountain

This is an 8x10 watercolor with pastel. This is another in my "Chocolate" series. I have fun doing these. I just think of dark chocolate, caramel, mints and peppermints and then hopefully the art will come out. There are more to follow, so stay tuned! If you're interested in this painting, please contact me at jcengles@verizon.net or:

I have done several canvas paintings, but they have been mainly of flowers and I have them in my home. I hope you like this one. I like the gold and violet and the contrast of red in this piece. It is for sale, please contact me at jcengles@verizon.net or carolengles.artspan.com if you're interested.

Red Confetti Two

8x10 watercolor with pastel. This piece has very dark, rich colors including Prussian Blue and Burnt Sienna. I have a book about color and it is interesting to read about the history of pigments and colors. The earth colors, such as Burnt Sienna, are old colors and have been used for a long, long time. The Italians during the Renaissance are credited for developing Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber; as the names suggest, by roasting sienna and umber to create the pigments.
