18 x 24 ink sketch on paper. This is an example of how I practice sketching horses. I do these without looking at photos. I just quickly do them from memory. The purpose of this is to keep my technique free and loose. I think it is really important to practice and not be afraid to make a mistake. When you are too conscious of that, you lose the flow and spontaneity in your work.
