About Me

McMinnville, OR, United States
Hi! Welcome to my blog. I am a mixed media artist who lives in McMinnville, Oregon. I work in acrylics, watercolor, pastel, charcoal and other water and drawing media. My main subjects are abstracts, abstract landscapes, florals and gardens, equine abstracts and pet portraits. I love to use color! I try to incorporate the three C's in all of my work - color, contrast and composition! Most of these paintings are for sale. Please check with me for availability and prices if not posted. Grey Bluff Two

This is an 8x10 acrylic with pastel and charcoal. I have done a couple of these with coral, grey and olive green. I have a larger version of this as well. I really like this color combination. I try sometimes to work with colors that don't seem to naturally go together. Olive green is not a color that you would usually see with peach or coral, but I think it works well here.

Golden Sky One

This is a 16x11 watercolor with pastel and charcoal. I have done a couple of these with this color combination. The gold yellow and dark grey is rather strong, so I have contrasted them with the softer pastel colors of mint, lavender etc. This piece would look good with a dark charcoal metal frame. Let me know what you think! I always enjoy and value your comments.

Violet and Red Three by Carol Engles

8x10 watercolor with pastel. This really is as bright as it looks. Too bright for some I guess. But, if you would like a cheery piece of art for a dark corner or even your laundry room, contact me about this one! It reminds me of a party or celebration!

November Sky Five by Carol Engles

This is an 8x10 watercolor with pastel. I used neutrals with splashes of color. I used to avoid neutrals, until I finally realized that they were color, too! They serve as a "bed" for other colors. Let me know if you're interested in this piece. I also have several others with this theme. They look nice grouped together. They are both abstract and abstract landscape?

Bright Blue and Brown by Carol Engles

This is an 8x10 watercolor with pastel. I wanted to do a piece with a lot of dark tones and powerful colors. These colors really pop out when framed under glass. Pastels are wonderful because they are so brilliant.

Aubergine Four

This is a 5x7 watercolor with pastel with "Aubergine" colors - plum, purple, mauve, deep rust and/or eggplant. If you're interested in this or a larger version let me know. Muted colors like this, don't have to be boring!

Blue & Gold

8x10 watercolor with pastel on paper. I have done several with this color combination. I love using Prussian Blue! It's probably my favorite blue. I also like to use black with blue. This piece is for sale, as are most pieces on my blog. Contact me if you're interested or just leave me a comment. I really appreciate your feedback.

Early March Morning Two

This is the second one in this style that I have done. It's water media with pastel and charcoal. I love doing line in my pieces. I even get a bit carried away with it if I am not careful! I just love the texture. I plan to do larger versions of these in the 18x24 size. Let me know if you're interested in this one or the larger ones.

Coral and Aqua One

8x10 watercolor with pastel on paper. For some reason, I like aqua with brown and rust. I guess it's because you don't expect it. Actually, that's what's fun with color and abstract, the combinations can be almost anything! Of course, not everything works, but I think this one does.

Windy Yellow Field

8x10 watercolor with pastel on paper. This is a minimalist work with a Southwest feel.  I tried really hard to keep this simple and loose. Sometimes you can over work a painting too much. I have been doing a lot of work lately in violet, blue  and green so it was time to do something in bright sunny colors. It's very warm here today - and will be even warmer tomorrow. Let me know if you like this piece. It is for sale as well as the others I post on my blog. And remember, I do commissions, too.

Dark Green Field

I am in a green mood! It's a good spring color, don't you think. This is a 5x7 water media with pastel done in a monochromatic way. I wanted to capture a landscape with a distant horizon and do it with one main color. This could also make a nice large piece. Let me know if you're interested in this or anything else. I always appreciate your comments.

Powder Blue Field 5x7 watercolor with pastel

Today is my Mom's birthday. Her favorite color is blue. She encouraged me to do abstract art as a kid and I will always be thankful for her encouragement. Happy Birthday Mom!

Violet Field Two

This is a 5x7 acrylic with pastel. I must be in a violet mood lately! I plan to do some of these as larger pieces as well. These small ones also look really good grouped together. I enjoy doing these minimalist pieces with strong colors. You could also call these color field paintings.

Red Violet Four

Time for brighter, stronger colors. Actual, I really wasn't thinking of much, other than almost clashing colors that would pop off the page. When someone asks me what one of my abstracts represents, I have to say that sometimes they are a field, horizon or a cityscape etc. Many times they just come out of my head as form and color - nothing  specific. That's why abstracts are so much fun, they don't have to represent anything. The viewer can see or feel whatever...
This could be viewed as a carnival or circus?
