Though Portland does get snow, most of it falls in the Cascades and the eastern parts of the state. I want these paintings to show that the rainy, cloudy winter days aren't all that grey. In my mind, light blue, lavender and greens are part of the Portland winterscape.

Q and A with Carol: "Do you ever do realistic horses?"

No. But I do realistic dogs occasionally. I decided a couple years ago, that I would draw or paint horses in what I call a semi-abstract style and I would depict them moving - galloping, cantering, trotting, jumping etc. I think the movement and energy of horses is perfect for this style. I enjoy the freedom to suggest flowing manes and tails, exaggerated legs and hooves, muscles and necks. However, I always try to keep the eyes more realistic. I want the eyes to always be the center of interest and if they are too abstract, they can be a distraction.

16 x 20 charcoal drawing on paper. In this drawing I tried to capture the elegance of an Arabian filly. I drew her with her hind leg lifted highly at her hock, her tail carried up and her back flat. And, of course, her face dished, typical of an Arabian, one of my favorite breeds. Even though I do these drawings in an abstract style, I like to keep the basic traits of the different breeds in my artwork. So, I guess you could say that they aren't totally abstract.

Contrast of color and shapes/lines is something I pay a lot of attention to because it creates interest in a painting. To me if I paint an abstract piece with a green pasture and a blue sky, that approach is too realistic and defeats the purpose of the abstract process.

8 x 11 watercolor, pastel and charcoal. This piece is bright and has some dark, rich areas as well. I have been to Arizona, but not to Sedona. I finished this piece and I needed a name and thought Sedona and the red rocks that are so distinctive to the area would be a good fit. I also thought the lines and squiggles suggest a Southwest feel. I don't always start with a place or city in mind, I just think about the colors I want to use and then it all follows from there.

The Temecula Valley has rolling hills with vineyards and ranch land, some with old barbed wire fencing from the past. In fact, Vail Ranch in the southern Temecula Valley was a final destination for cattle drives from Arizona.

I was just asked this question. In many of my paintings, I use watercolor and acrylic as an under painting and then finish with soft pastels. Soft pastels can be subtle or muted or they can be very vivid or bright. They really do jump off the page. And, under glass, they are even more vivid. The large pastel makers including Sennelier, Rembrandt and others offer hundreds of colors. The sky is really the limit. So, yes, my paintings really are bright. Of course, everyone's computer screen varies, so we all see a some what different intensity.

Q and A with Carol: Why do you prefer abstract art over realistic art?

I just had someone ask me this question. In fact, many people have said to me that they "don't get abstract." I have also heard, as have many abstract artists, that "you do abstract because you can't do realistic art." You could argue that abstract isn't easy for some people to understand or appreciate, just like progressive jazz is not appreciated by some who mainly enjoy country music for example. I think it all comes down to what you have been exposed to and what you LIKE - what makes you feel good and what you want around you. But, as far as artists not being able to realistic art because it is more difficult to do, that is not necessarily true. As artists we are set up, if you will, in different ways. Some of us think and create in abstract terms. Others are more realistically oriented and they find their joy in that art. Then there are many artists who do both equally well, but prefer one over another. Personally, I enjoy abstract art more because it involves, in my mind, more creativity. And I never get bored doing it. It is more of a puzzle to me and consequently a challenge. As I have stated before, my abstract landscapes, which are really more semi-abstract, are relaxing for me and not as demanding as the geometric or abstract pieces. So when I don't have the mental or creative energy, I do the less demanding landscapes. If you have any questions about my art, e-mail me! It is always fun and interesting to hear from you!

This is supposed to convey a soft mood and lines some times detract from that intent. I do a watercolor wash underneath and then add the pastel. I add the colors in the center for contrast and interest, and because it is an abstract I can do whatever I want! HA!

Sometimes I forget to check the dimensions of my paintings and end up with some different sizes, but they can usually be cropped to a smaller size without changing the image that much. Hope you like these. Prussian blue, copper or brown orange with chartreuse green/yellow is a favorite color combination of mine.

8 x 11 acrylic on paper. I usually use red as a highlight, not as a dominant color in a painting. In this piece, red is more dominant and I think it turned out well. I like the combination of red with the plum and then the surprise addition of aqua and the flesh color. I will have to try this combination in a larger format as well.

Q and A with Carol: Why do you work mainly with pastel and watercolor on paper instead of oil on canvas?

This is a good question. Oil (and/or acrylic) on canvas is arguably the most popular painting medium and support. Watercolor and pastel have their fans as well. As artists we usually prefer one or two media over others. Most artists don't do everything. Picasso was an exception! I took lots of art classes in my college years and after and learned from all of them. I took a weaving class at my Mom's request so that I could do a wall hanging for her and even though I love textiles and tapestries, I was not cut out to be a weaver. I also took print making classes as well as many classes in painting, design and drawing and realized that I enjoyed working on paper. I don't really enjoy working with thick paint and a "bouncy" canvas. Plus, watercolor and pastel are immediate. And they are perfect for someone who likes to sketch and draw rather paint entirely with brushes. And in the case of pastels, they are brilliant. Under glass, pastels jump out at you. Obviously, they need to be under glass and framed. That is why I try to do paintings in sizes that can easily fit in a ready made frame to save on costs. A simple metal or wood frame is always classy and appropriate

We ride from the wine country area of the Temecula Valley, through this canyon to the lake. It is beautiful and surprisingly dramatic. I did this painting on a rougher textured watercolor paper and because of the texture, the painting has a "pebbly"look. Hope you like it!

I have lots of ideas but I run out of time and energy to get to all of them! But, this week I have committed my time and energy to doing more abstracts like this one. I realized after I completed these, they are measuring 8 x 11. Sometimes I don't pay close enough attention to the dimensions. Oops! However, as you can see, you could mat and frame this with a ready made frame to 8 x 10 and not harm the image.

14 x 16 ink on paper. This drawing was inspired by our Peruvian stallion, Valeroso. I have done several drawings inspired by Val. He's so animated! These are difficult for me to do! Gestural drawings are supposed to be simple with just enough line to capture the subject and movement. It is very easy to add too much line and then you lose the quality of the gesture. Why do you do a lot of pieces in the 17 x 23 inch size? Can they be framed and matted to another size?

I enjoy working with 18 x 24 size Strathmore watercolor paper. I tape off the borders and work within approx. 17 x 23 inches. Most of my paintings can be cropped or matted to 16 x 22 or in some cases 16 x 20. You can purchase a mat in a size that you think compliments the art and then get a ready made frame that fits and you can frame the work at a reasonable price. Or you can have it custom framed. Framing is expensive, that's why I try to keep my art affordable in the first place. Watercolors and pastels have to be protected and framed. But, they also look so beautiful and brilliant under glass.

14 x 16 oil pastel and ink on paper. I have received lots of requests to do more Western equine art. So, I have done three more Western pieces - this is the first one! I wanted to catch the speed of this sport with lots of line and color. I also wanted to show the intensity of the horse with emphasis on the horse's eye. As I have noted before, even though I do horses in an abstract style, I try to depict the eyes in a more realistic way. They are the focus point of my paintings and if they aren't recognizable or realistic, my paintings don't have the intensity and personality that I am trying to capture.

I have many requests to talk discuss my art and answer questions, so this is my first Q & A! I'll try to do this a couple times of week, so If you have an art question, send it me and I'll answer it as soon as possible.

When I am asked about the availability of my paintings, I tell the inquirer the painting is available, sold, or in some cases, not for sale. I usually don't go back through my blog and add SOLD to the listing. I suppose I should, but I just don't get around to it - UNTIL NOW! The blog Daily Painters Art Gallery has an incredibly easy way to update your paintings as sold. I am a member of this great group blog and today I went through my listings there and added the SOLD red buttons. I will try to do a better job on my own blog and update the posts as soon as they are sold. I don't have the energy to go back through all of them, but I will try to keep them more up-to-date starting with this month's posts. Of all the styles that I do, these abstract landscapes are the most relaxing. And they are definitely the easiest for me to do. When clients purchase a large one, I ship them one of these 5 x 7's as a surprise - but I always send them one that is not like the one they purchased! It's more fun that way. SOLD

10 x 14 charcoal on paper. This is a drawing of my Peruvian stallion, Valeroso. Even though he is a gaited horse, he loves to gallop. He also likes to arch his neck and then take off. He's a joy to be around and believe it or not, under saddle he is very calm and responsive. He is my most relaxing horse to ride. I also use images of Valeroso as blueprints for some of my other equine art. I change a few dimensions and details to depict different breeds.
